The process of animating was fairly quick, and we shot the sequences in just a few days. Unfortunately with just two of us being animators, we found that a lot of the work fell down to us, particularly the editing and post production, though we made an effort to have everyone contribute and help them to get to grips with the technique.
The animated content was assembled to produce a rough cut (uploaded to Dropbox).
We stuck to the storyboard for the most part; but some elements had to be cut or amended to suit the time we had and the materials. I feel like it would have been beneficial to create an animatic as the storyboard didn’t quite account for the timing of the audio and we found that we didn’t quite have enough footage – some parts would have to be held on screen for an unnaturally long time. The solution was to cut some parts of the audio as well as animate some digital graphics on top of the existing shots – this made a great difference in the pacing and helped create interest in scenes where not a lot happened.
The film itself does have quite a rough feeling due to the way in which we animated, I think that this can be jarring at points, but that stylistically it works with the imagery we have and the desire to create a light-hearted film – making what could be a difficult topic relatable and enjoyable to watch; aided by the tactility of the imagery.
Overall, I’m happy with what we were able to produce and feel that we’ve sensitively handled the topic in such a way that isn’t necessarily educational; but provides an insight into the experience of a person with misophonia – a much needed lens into a world that hasn’t been previously explored in such a way.
