Although happy with the colour palette, I wanted to play around with the contrast and line work of the characters. So, I fiddled about with the opacity of certain elements and the amount of detail shown. I quite like how the character looks part of its environment due to the similar colour values - giving it an almost translucent appearance. I find this less jarring than having a completely white stomach for example. I'm not so keen on the graphic outline of the 4th render (below), it's not as neat looking and the third doesn't provide enough contrast. I've decided to take the second design forward - it's similar to the first, but with some definition to allow the different body parts to be seen.
I've used the same style here, making the bear take on a similar pink hue to the stomach. I think this gives a subtle indication of lighting and having him shift from blue to pink shows a shift in narrative and the progression from one setting to a very different one that the characters share in a strange way. Given the strong focus on setting for the project, I think it's suitable that the setting visually influences the characters as much as the characters influence setting.
The stomach itself is pretty simple and graphic, I really enjoy the clashing pink and red which seem pretty warm and almost bodily... The organic wobbliness of the line gives sense of unease and I find the almost childlike aesthetic quite charming.
Below is a mock-up showing the characters together as I hope to portray them in the film. The scale of the larger creature in comparison to the smaller one instantly creates some tension as we consider the big creature as a possible threat. His darker coat might also give a sense of dominance over the small creature who appears to almost fade into the background.
In terms of surroundings, I want to keep it simple. The lines and 'pebbles' around the characters give a sense of texture and ground them in the otherwise empty frame. I only want to allude to them being in the open air - perhaps in the clearing of a forest - and save the excitement for the stomach!
