10. More Animatic

This week so far I've been working on my animatic again. I've got the final section done and am quite happy with it as a satisfying conclusion to the film. Which is easily said at this stage while I'm still figuring out the middle...

(this section is a return to the bathroom following the sequence characterised by her worries that takes place in a less naturalistic space - maybe in her imagination)

I’ve stuck with the idea of her washing away the hair as a kind of resolution, which I think effectively punctuates her spiral of worry and would indicate she’s ‘over it’. But when she leaves the bathroom and looks back, it’s suggested that there’s still a niggling worry - but she has to get on with life, so exits. I end with the image of the older self in the mirror to drive home the idea of this ever present worry. I was quite concerned with the tone that this would strike, but now I’m not sure that she needs to offer the camera a smile or any telling emotion. Maybe the presence of the reflection is enough to end on?

I’ve also come up with a ‘hairy’ transition to black (which looks quite crude in the animatic) which might wrap things up quite nicely. I image strands of hair quite quickly and messily dominating the frame before the end credits.

This emphasis on the hair comes from realising following the catch up on Monday that it would be best to keep this as the thread that runs through the film and not to let it get lost among everything else. I do want to include imagery of other facets of ageing, and would still like to explore the papery idea if I can get this to work... but I should concentrate on presenting a cohesive narrative with the hair tying it together - the thing that sparks the worry; then becomes an antagonist; and dissipates the tension when it's washed away.

Next: work on the middle section and actually figure out how it should play out!

With that, I'll have a singular animatic and can maybe start inserting sound recordings to assemble a scratch track. At this stage probably just with 'bathroom sounds' like I mentioned in the last post.

Between the animatic for the first and last section, I'm looking at about 3 minutes of animation. With the mid section I envision roughly 5 minutes total - which feels doable.

I'll work on a test shot before the summative too, to try and present something of desirable production quality and hopefully give me a better idea of what I'm aiming for too.
