My first animatic is based on the idea of the stop motion man becoming frustrated at his desk while his CGI counterpart dozes at his. I created a rough storybard which I shot in Dragonframe to produce this animatic; allowing me to get a feel for the pacing.
While I like the simplicity and composition of shots, I'd like to push myself slightly more in terms of narrative and portraying characteristics. Additionally, the stop motion armature would restrict the believability of the action due to its lack of functioning hand/finger joints and I'd likely have to use some sort of rigging to accomplish the swinging chair shots and paper throwing... so with time restrictions in mind, I started working towards something more energetic but easier to achieve.
Still focusing on the 'tortured artist' thing, I've imagined the stop motion man as a painter, who, in his passion becomes frenzied as he works - only to step back and decide that his work is a disaster. Meanwhile, the CGI man is lazy; asleep in his chair: his inaction a contrast to the exuberant painter.
I feel that some of the shots are quite lazily thought out, and the pacing can do with tightening up to give a sense of the characters' respective passion and laziness. So I constructed a second animatic in an attempt to remedy this:
